CCI Eurolam is introducing nowadays the new generation of standard 135°C TG FR4 adapted to the new "Lead free" processes and the new ROHS requirements.
We listed the most frequently asked questions about this product named DURAVER E CU 104i (i standing for IMPROVED).
The most frequently asked questions about DURAVER E CU 104i
1. Properties of the product
1.1 Electrical properties
Question: Are there differences between both products?
Answer: - The loss factor tan delta and the dielectric constant epsilon r are at the same level. - CAF-testing is currently in test but due to the resin system a much better performance is expected with DE104i. - Due to the filler in the resin system a tighter thickness distribution could be reached with the improved version which results in a very stable impedance. - For further information please visit our homepage (www.isola-group.com).
1.2 Mechanical properties
Question: Are the mechanical properties the same as for DE104?
Answer: We have measured f. e. the flexural strength which is the same for both products. The interlaminar bond strength with DE104i is slightly lower.
1.3 Thermal properties
Question: Does Isola provide a comparison of both products DE104 versus DE104i?
Answer: Yes. Please get in contact with your responsible sales/technical manager who will provide an overview/comparison of both products.
Questions related to process
2.1 Drilling
Question: Does the filler effect the drill behaviour?
Answer: Isola has performed a study with a drill bit manufacturer. Outcome: No difference for drilling parameter settings compared to standard DE104 version has been observed. This is also true for drill bit wear and drill bit breakage.
Question: Can you insure the same behaviour under laser drilling compared to standard DE104?
Answer: Final results are not available yet but Isola expects a more homogeneous drilling behaviour due to the equally distributed filler in the resin matrix.
2.2 Plating
Question: Do we need a different hole cleaning process or can we use the same process as for the standard DE104?
Answer: In most cases the same parameter set can be used at chemical hole cleaning. Despite the fact that it is safer, In little cases it might be advisable to verify the test result
2.3 Pressing
Question: Can we use the same press cycle?
Answer: Yes, the same press cycle can be used for DE104i as it is used for DE104.
Question: Any experience in an autoclave?
Answer: No, not yet.
Question: Are the compensation factors identical to DE104 and can I keep my artwork?
Answer: Due to the filler added to the resin matrix the dimstab behaviour may vary in small limits since the dimstab in x and y direction is mainly influenced by the glass cloth type which will remain the same. Grain and weft directions are still of importance.
3 Distinguishing, mixing and availability
Question: How can I distinguish the two products DE104 and DE104i?
Answer: The products can be differentiated by IR scans which are typical for each product and logistically by different part numbers.
Question: Can I mix DE104 and DE104i?
Answer: In order to receive the outstanding characteristics of the improved version it is not recommended to mix prepregs and/or cores. If the products are mixed, the characteristics of DE104 will be received.
Question: When can I get samples of the improved version?
Answer: For rigid (1.55 mm thickness) from January 1st, 2006 on volume is available and for ML production Isola will provide samples from January 1st, 2006 on and start volume production in 1st quarter 2006.
Question: Do we have different grain direction?
Answer: Still under study.
4 General information
Question: Where is the product produced?
Answer: Europe: Düren/Germany and Bottegone/Italy A/P: Suzhou/China US: To be decided
Question: Is the improved version “halogenfree”?
Answer: No, it isn’t.
Question: What Cu-foil should be used for outer layers?
Answer: Isola recommends standard Cu-foils.
Question: Are the same standard constructions for ML-cores and prepregs available for the improved version as for the current one?
Answer: Yes, the same standard constructions are available for the improved version.
5 Approvals
Question: How to proceed with UL?
Answer: UL has confirmed to Isola that no approval for DE104i has to be performed neither on laminate nor on MCIL level. It is the intention of Isola to replace DE104 by DE104i. The switch over will be done in congruence with the market requirements.
